"Advance visa or visa on arrival? We break down the exact requirements, Dhaka airport procedures, and how Roam Bengal helps you clear immigration without the guesswork."

The plane doors open and warm, humid air rolls down the aisle. You step into Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with a passport in one hand and a head full of questions. Do I need a visa? Can I pay at the counter? What if the officer says no? The line ahead of you is long, the signs are busy, and nobody is in a hurry to explain.

We've watched that moment go smoothly and go badly. At Roam Bengal, we meet travellers at this exact spot, and the difference almost always comes down to paperwork done at home, not luck at the desk. This guide walks you through both routes, what each one costs, and what to carry.

One caution before we start. Visa rules change, and we are a tour operator, not an immigration office. Use this as a starting point, then confirm the details with the Bangladesh embassy or consulate that serves you.

🛂 Do You Need a Visa?

Almost every foreign visitor does. You can get one in two ways: apply in advance through a Bangladesh embassy or consulate, or request a visa on arrival at Dhaka airport if you qualify. They look similar on paper. In practice, they are very different experiences.

📝 Route One - Apply Before You Fly

This is the route we recommend. You apply through the Bangladesh embassy or consulate in your country, and many missions let you fill in the form online first. You then submit your passport and documents, pay the fee, and receive the visa before you travel.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh, for example, advises American travellers to get the visa in advance, and notes that the visa is generally multiple-entry with validity of one to five years depending on the purpose of travel. The fee quoted for U.S. citizens is $160. Fees and validity vary by nationality and by mission, so treat that number as an example, not a rule.

You arrive with the visa already in your passport, so the airport queue is short.

🛬 Route Two - Visa on Arrival

Bangladesh does offer a visa on arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, but it is narrower than many blogs suggest. The official Special Branch page says visitors from countries where Bangladesh has no embassy or mission are eligible, along with visitors from countries that give landing permits or visas on arrival to Bangladeshi travellers. Several Bangladesh missions also publish a list of eligible nationalities, shown below.

Countries listed as eligible (for tourism, trade or investment, per Bangladesh mission pages):

  • The United Kingdom and other European countries

  • United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand

  • Russia, China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Brunei

  • United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain

  • Egypt and Turkey

  • The condition that catches people out: the official instructions tie eligibility to travelling from a country where Bangladesh has no embassy, high commission or consulate. Others who may qualify include foreign nationals of Bangladeshi origin and their spouses and children, and UN and embassy staff based in Bangladesh. Lists differ slightly between missions, so check yours.

  • Apply online first- on the official portal, voa.specialbranch.gov.bd, you create an account, fill in the traveller form, and upload three things: a recent photo, your passport bio page and an invitation letter. You then keep your tracking ID and print the acknowledgement receipt. Reports say to apply at least 72 hours before your flight. Separately, Bangladesh now has a free online arrival and departure card at edcard.specialbranch.gov.bd for air travelers. Stick to the official government addresses, because some third-party sites charge for forms that are free.

The key points:

  • It is valid for up to 30 days and is a single-entry visa.

  • The fee is about US$50, with some sources listing $51 including tax. Plan to carry cash in US dollars or euros, because you can't count on card payment.

  • Use the same airport for entry and departure.

Immigration officers grant it at their sole discretion.

The U.S. Embassy itself says the visa on arrival is a privilege, not a right, and recommends getting your visa in advance. Several embassy pages also tie eligibility to travelling from a country where Bangladesh has no mission, which rules out many ordinary tourists.

🎒 What to Carry

Whichever route you take, assemble this before you leave home:

  • A passport valid for at least six months after arrival, with blank pages.

  • A confirmed return or onward air ticket.

  • Your hotel booking or a host invitation.

  • Cash in US dollars for the fee and for emergencies. Some missions also list a minimum of US$500 in cash or card as proof of funds.

  • A passport-sized photo for an advance application. For the visa on arrival, the U.S. Embassy says you do not need to bring one.

  • Proof of purpose: for tourists, this means the hotel booking and return ticket.

  • Also check any health requirements for your country of departure. Some countries, including Pakistan, have specific vaccination rules attached to the visa.

🧭 Step by Step at the Airport

  1. Complete the immigration form while you wait in the visa payment line. It asks for your address in Bangladesh, so use your hotel.

  2. Pay the visa fee at the designated counter and keep the receipt.

  3. Take your passport, form, ticket and hotel details to the visa on arrival counter.

  4. Answer the officer's questions calmly and briefly. Tourism is the simplest purpose to explain.

  5. Collect your passport with the visa inside, then continue through immigration to baggage claim.

⚠️ Mistakes We See Most Often

The same few slips catch travellers again and again. Arriving with a passport that has under six months left. Showing up with no hotel booking or return ticket. Carrying only a card when the counter wants cash. Assuming the visa on arrival is guaranteed because a friend got one last year. Planning to fly out of a different airport than the one you entered through. At Roam Bengal, we see these slip through the cracks at the worst moment, right after a long flight, when patience is thin, and the queue is not.

⏳ Staying Longer

If you want more than 30 days, or you need multiple entries, apply for a regular visa at a Bangladesh mission before you go. You can also extend or renew visas at the Department of Immigration and Passports in Dhaka, but extensions take time, so we plan around them early.

🤝 How Roam Bengal Helps

We can't issue visas, but we can handle everything around them. Roam Bengal can provide [a hotel booking confirmation and a letter of invitation] for your application, and one of our guides will meet you at the airport, so your first hour in Dhaka is easy. Our private, English-speaking guides also know the terminal, the counters and the order in which things happen.

❓ Questions We Hear Before Every Trip

May I get a tourist visa on arrival? Possibly, if your nationality or route qualifies, but it is discretionary. We advise applying in advance.

How long can I stay? A visa on arrival is valid for up to 30 days and is single-entry. A regular visa depends on what the embassy grants.

What if I'm refused a visa on arrival? The officer decides, and you could be denied entry. That is why we don't recommend relying on it.

Should I apply online or in person? Check your local Bangladesh mission. Many offer an online form, but you may still need to submit your passport.
