📜 Trip Overview

Two Icons, One Day, Four Centuries Apart

Dhaka offers a rare chance to experience very different chapters of architecture within a single day. This private tour brings together two remarkable buildings: the National Assembly Building, designed by Louis Kahn, and Bait ur Rouf Mosque, designed by Marina Tabassum.

The two buildings could hardly look more different. At Bait ur Rouf Mosque, exposed brick, angled walls and carefully placed openings create a quiet space where natural light becomes part of the architecture. At the National Assembly Building, massive geometric forms, open spaces and surrounding water create a very different sense of scale. Seeing them on the same day makes the contrast especially striking.

You’ll begin at Bait ur Rouf Mosque, taking time to appreciate its simple design and changing light before continuing to the National Assembly complex. There, you’ll explore the exterior, Crescent Lake and the Parliament grounds. With advance permission, you can also enter parts of the building, including the Assembly Hall, Prayer Hall and Library.

If time permits, the day can continue to Lalbagh Fort, an unfinished 17th-century Mughal citadel. Moving from contemporary architecture to Kahn’s modernist landmark and then to Mughal-era design creates a compact view of how Dhaka’s architecture has evolved across centuries.

💡 Good to know: Parliament’s interior requires advance permission, and you must submit passport and visa details ahead of time. If entering the building is important to you, we strongly recommend booking well in advance.

🗺️ Full-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Bait ur Rouf Mosque — Architecture Through Light.

The tour starts at Bait ur Rouf Mosque. Designed by Marina Tabassum, the mosque uses exposed brick, angled walls, and openings to bring natural light into the interior. The building achieved the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016. Take a little time inside to appreciate how the changing light shapes the space.

  2. 2

Arriving at the National Assembly Building

From the intimate scale of Bait ur Rouf Mosque, the National Assembly Building offers a striking change. Designed by Louis Kahn, the complex is known for its geometric forms, large openings, and monumental scale. The approach from Manik Mia Avenue also provides a well-known view of the building.

  3. 3

Crescent Lake and the Parliament Grounds

Crescent Lake surrounds part of the Parliament complex and forms an important part of Kahn’s overall design. Walk through the grounds with your guide and learn how the water, geometry, and open spaces work together with the main building.

  4. 4

Inside the Assembly — When Permits Allow

With advance clearance, you may enter parts of the Parliament complex, including the Assembly Hall, Prayer Hall and Library. Interior access is not guaranteed. Parliamentary sessions, security requirements, or permit decisions can affect access. If permission is unavailable, the exterior, grounds, and Crescent Lake remain part of the tour.

  5. 5

Lunch — Parliament Cafeteria or Nearby Restaurant

When the cafeteria is open and access allows, lunch can be taken inside the Parliament complex. If it is unavailable, your guide will arrange lunch at a trusted nearby Bengali restaurant instead.

  6. 6

Lalbagh Fort — A Mughal Contrast

If the day’s schedule allows, continue to Lalbagh Fort. The unfinished 17th-century Mughal citadel provides a very different architectural experience from the modern National Assembly Building. The contrast between historic Mughal design and modernist concrete makes this an optional but worthwhile addition.

  7. 7

    Return to Hotel

After the final visit, your driver takes you back to your hotel. The day brings together contemporary religious architecture, modern civic design and Mughal heritage—three very different chapters of Dhaka’s architectural history.
